Achieved LEED Gold Certification Winner: 2010 Biennial AIA Distinguished Building Award for Sustainability Eastern Illinois Chapter AIA

When Potash Corporation wanted to create a multi-use facility to provide for local office, safe haven and sales training at its Marseilles plant, they called on BC&A Architects to design the 7400 sf state of the art facility. The final design includes private offices, a board room, and a large flexible conference room. When BC&A suggested LEED certification, they agreed that pursuit of LEED certification fit with the corporate commitment to sustainability.

“As we work to maximize the environmental benefits of our products, we also strive to reduce our environmental footprint,” says William J. Doyle, President and CEO of Potash Corp. The New Administrative Building at Marseilles is the first project in LaSalle County to be registered with USGBC (US Green Building Council) for certification. The final design incorporates sophisticated day lighting, high efficiency air to air heat pumps, and heat recovery systems. Overall, the building will exceeds the new state energy code by more than 50%. Additionally, the building uses materials with high recycled content and no added formaldehyde. Construction waste was carefully monitored to achieve 90% reduction of all waste disposed in a landfill.

Administrative Office and Training Center

The building site located adjacent to existing administration building at entry to site. Site improvements included removal of many overhead utility lines, replacement of chain link security fence with wrought iron fence, and replacement of metal guard shack with new building of consistent material to the new building. Parking for conferees is substantially reduced by busing to and from hotels. Architectural design of building was created to improve aesthetic of site while maintaining an industrial character. Building functions as offices for plant administration and conferencing for up to 60 persons. Conferencing is for sales and employee training. Facility also achieved a LEED Gold Certification, with 43 points of 69 total available under LEED NC2.2
